Free-Write Friday: The Unsolved Murder of Robert Wone

Happy Friday!!! We’ve finally made it to the weekend. And I am here, live on my computer, typing this.

It’s currently Friday, October 9, 2026, when I am writing this. So if this is posted tomorrow or Sunday, does that mean I time-traveled? Maybe.

I also have a theory called “Murder Math.” So grab your tea, wine, or juice boxes, and let’s see if we can solve a crime using Murder Math.

For this case, we are going to Washington, D.C. (Circa 2006)

Who Was Robert Wone?

Robert Wone

Family Background & Early Life:

Robert Eric Wone was born on June 1, 1974, in Manhattan, New York. Robert was a fourth-generation Chinese American. His great-grandparents immigrated from China to the United States in the late 1930s and settled in New York.

Upbringing: Robert grew up in Brooklyn’s Sheepshead Bay neighborhood with his younger brother, Andrew. His father, William, worked as a technology executive at Chase Manhattan Bank, and his mother, Aimee, was a school librarian.

From a young age, Robert was deeply fascinated by community leadership and politics. At 15, he volunteered to knock on doors for Chuck Schumer’s congressional re-election campaign and later worked for New York Governor Mario Cuomo during his college summers. He graduated as the class valedictorian from Xaverian High School, a private Catholic prep school in Brooklyn.

Robert was heavily involved in student government, civic leadership, and university history. He also received the Algernon Sydney Sullivan Award, which honors graduates based on “heart, mind, and helpfulness to others.

He formed close, lasting ties with his classmates, faculty, and university leadership, including former University president Davis Y. Paschall.

To those who had the pleasure of knowing Robert, remember him as an exceptionally kind, humble, and detail-oriented person who sought to support those around him without personal acclaim.

He was also known for performing quiet, anonymous acts of service, such as feeding expired parking meters to save strangers from tickets, scrubbing campus statues clean, and secretly purchasing sod for campus lawns out of his own pocket.

A Playful Gentleman:

Alongside his strong work ethic and seriousness about civic service, friends noted he had a warm, silly sense of humor. His wife, Kathy Wone, described him as deeply nurturing, encouraging, and a classic gentleman.

Robert and his wife, Katherine “Kathy” Yu, first connected in January 2002. Kathy was working in Chicago at the time, and her employer asked her to email Robert to invite him to serve as a panelist for an American Bar Association legal conference.

On Valentine’s Day 2002, Kathy traveled to Washington, D.C., where the two had their first formal date over dinner.

On June 7, 2003, Robert and Kathy got married in Itasca, Illinois.

Robert’s Death Timeline: Night of August 2, 2006

  • 8:45 AM: Robert and his wife Kathy take the metro into Washington, D.C., together from their home in Fairfax County, Virginia, and part ways.
  • 9:30 PM: Wone finishes a continuing Legal Education class in D.C., speaks with his wife, Kathy, on the phone, and mentions he is returning to his office at Radio Free/Radio Liberty to work late.
  • 9:40 PM – 10:24 PM: Robert finishes work at his office. At 10:24 PM, he calls his friend Joseph Price to confirm that he is heading over to stay overnight at Joseph’s townhouse.
  • 10:30 PM-10:35 PM: Robert arrives at Joseph’s residence on Swann Street. Also living at the residence along with Joseph were Victor Zaborsky and Dylan Ward. According to Joseph, they chat in the kitchen over water.
  • 11:00 PM: The residents claim everyone retired to their respective rooms.
  • 11:05 PM-11:07: Two draft emails are composed on Robert’s BlackBerry (to his wife and a colleague)
  • 11:00 PM- 11:35 PM: A neighbor later reports hearing a loud, terrifying scream coming from the townhouse area around this window.
  • 11:49 PM: Victor Zaborsky calls 911 to report that an unknown intruder entered the home and stabbed Robert.
  • 11:54 PM: Paramedics arrive. They find Robert lying on a fold-out sofa bed in the second-floor guest room with three clean, precise stab wounds to his chest/abdomen.
  • 11:59 PM: Emergency personnel transport Robert to George Washington University Hospital, where he is pronounced dead shortly after arrival.
  • At the time that Robert’s death was announced, Joseph Price called Robert’s wife, Kathy, to inform her of her husband’s death.

The investigation:

August 3, 2006:

Police noted no sign of forced entry. Not only that, but valuables such as money, jewelry, and phones were taken.

The crime scene itself was suspiciously cleaned, and officers noted that Robert’s body had been cleaned. Forensic evidence suggested that there were signs of sexual or physical restraint/incapacitation prior to the fatal stabbing.

I found another odd detail in this case. Dylan, Joseph, and Victor had all taken showers before the paramedics arrived. Sounds pretty sus to me!

All three men were dressed in clean white robes. Ah, yes, the good ol’ we definitely had nothing to do with this angle.

You would think that if an intruder entered the home, there would be signs of forced entry. Also, why would an intruder come in and head directly to the guest room that Robert was staying in, just to stab him?

Robert’s personal belongings were still intact. Indicating that this was… an inside job.

So there were no arrests made in Robert’s death, but I am sure I can break it down. Please take this seriously, but also with a grain of salt:

The crime scene itself was rather unusual. Robert had been stabbed, and I am sure those stab wounds were pretty deep, so why was the scene not the least bit bloody?

The fact that Dylan, Joseph, and Victor all took showers is insane. Do we have something to hide, fellas? Dylan had his own set of knives, and one was conveniently missing.

Where did it go? Inside Robert, yes?

Someone on Reddit had an amazing theory: When Robert arrived at the house, the men hung out in the kitchen and had a drink of water. Going back to the incapacitation, it definitely checks out.

If only I could remember the person’s username, I would put it here. So all credit goes to him for spotting that. Kudos!

My personal opinion, as raw and unfiltered as it is, is that Robert was subjected to maybe some sick and twisted sexual fantasy. Robert was the only straight man in the home.

So, perhaps Dylan, Joseph, and Victor were sexually attracted to him and wanted to force him into sexual activity. If Robert hadn’t been incapacitated, he definitely wouldn’t have agreed to things like that. He was a straight, married man.

There was also semen found in Robert’s rectum. How did that happen? Could have been a natural response or… I do not even want to know.

All three of the men eventually changed their last names. As if that would help. It just makes it more suspicious to me.

I won’t put their faces on my blog because I am petty, and they don’t deserve it.

Anyway, this case should have been solved honestly. Sometimes there’s shady shit going on right under our noses.

There was no intruder. And lastly, BDSM is a thing. I did take a look at what BDSM entails, and boy, is it interesting.

However, those who enjoy engaging in extreme sex acts should always have a safe word that they use with their partner or partners.

In my mind, this case is solved. I have looked at it plenty of times. It’s honestly so, so ridiculous.

Le Sigh. I hate this so much.

Anyway, a message to Kathy:

Robert and Kathy

My condolences go out to you for having lost the love of your life. Robert sounded like an amazing person, and I am sure he’ll be with you every day. Stay strong, Kathy. May you find peace and healing.

And lastly, to Robert: “All the good men are taken far too soon.” Robert, I hope you are up in heaven flying around with your angel wings. It was a pleasure to know a bit about you while researching this case.

Rest well, Robert. ❤
