The Case: On June 13, 1994, Nicholas Patrick Barclay disappeared from San Antonio, Texas. His disappearance developed into one of the most remarkable cold cases in American history due to the bizarre deception that followed three years later.

Who Was Nicholas Barclay?

Nicholas Patrick Barclay was born on December 31, 1980, in San Antonio, Texas. He grew up with his mother, Beverly, and his older siblings, staying in the local area before his disappearance.

People that knew Nicholas described him as an energetic, athletic, but troubled young boy.

He was very active outdoors, loved sports, and spent much of his free time playing basketball with neighborhood friends. He went by the nickname “Nicky”.

Despite only being 13-years old, Nicholas was notorious, rebellious, and volatile at times. He had DIY tattoos that he had given himself, including a “T” between his left thumb and index finger, a “J” on his left shoulder, and the letters “L” and “N” on his left ankle.

He struggled with behavior at home and school, which led to early run-ins with local law enforcement. His juvenile record included breaking into a convenience store, stealing shoes, and threatening a teacher.

Prior to his disappearance, he had a history of walking off or running away for short periods after getting angry or facing consequences, which initially led family members and police officers to believe that he simply just ran off again when he went missing on June 13, 1994. In fact, he was scheduled to appear at a juvenile court hearing on June 14, 1994 the day after he vanished.

The Disappearance–June 13, 1994-San Antonio, Texas

On the afternoon of June 13, 1994, Nicholas called home asking for a ride after playing basketball with friends. His mother was sleeping after working a night shift, and his older brother, Jason, told him to walk home.

Nicholas never arrived and was reported missing. At the time of his disappearance, he had light hair, blue eyes, and specific hand/ankle tattoos.

The Imposter- October 1997-1998

In October 1997, authorities in Spain contacted Nicholas’s family, claiming that they had found him in a youth shelter.

Frédéric Bourdin, the man who claimed to be Nicholas was a 23-year old French serial imposter. Bourdin had dark hair, brown eyes, a French accent, and was about a decade older than Nicholas.

The Lie: Bourdin invented a detailed story that he had been kidnapped by a international child sex ring and trafficked to Europe.

The Return: Nicholas’s sister flew to Spain and accepted Bourdin as her brother. Bourdin was brought back to San Antonio, where he lived with the Barclay family for nearly four months despite glaring physical and behavioral discrepancies.

The Exposure of a Fraud:

A private investigator named Charlie Parker and FBI Special Agent Nancy Fisher eventually unmasked Bourdin. Fingerprint and blood analysis confirmed that the person living with the family was not Nicholas Barclay. Bourdin was arrested and sentenced to six years in U.S. federal prison for passport fraud and perjury.

Current Case Status and Theories:

Family Suspicion: Bourdin later claimed that the Barclay family accepted him as an imposter because they knew the real Nicholas was dead, alleging that members of the family (most notably his brother, Jason who died of a drug overdose in 1998) were involved in Nicholas’s death.

Law Enforcement questioned the family, but no physical evidence or charges surfaced.

A Cold Case: Still missing as of June 1994

And as for Nicholas himself, he is still listed as a missing person. There has been no physical trace or remains of Nicholas that have been found.

Final Thoughts:

This case is right up there with one of the most highly unusual cases. How could a 23-year old man impersonate a 13-year old boy? I also wonder what was going on within the Barclay household.
