In the summer of 2011, Jonah Shacknai, along with his six-year old son, and Jonah’s girlfriend, Rebecca Zahau, were staying at the Spreckles Mansion.

The Fatal Fall: July 11th, 2011:

Six-year old Max Shackani suffered a tragic, accidental fall from a second-story balcony inside the Spreckles Mansion while under the supervision of Rebecca Zahau.

Medical Responses & Outcome:

Emergency responders rushed Max to Rady Children’s Hospital in San Diego, where he was placed on life support. He succumbed to his injuries a few days later on July, 16th, 2011.

The Building Tension: July 11-13, 2011:

Growing Friction: In the immediate aftermath of Max’s fall, grief and panic quickly morphed into intense suspicion among family members staying at or arriving at the Coronado estate.

The Inner Circle: Jonah Shacknai’s brother, Adam Shacknai, arrived at the mansion on late July 12th to offer support, placing him, Jonah, and Rebecca under the same roof during a high-stress, emotionally volatile window.

Shifting Dynamics: Investigators later focused heavily on the communication breakdown and underlying friction during these 48 hours, noting that conflicting accounts and high-stakes family emotions set the stage for the tragic events that followed.

The Discovery: July 13, 2011

On the morning of July 13, Adam Shacknai discovered Rebecca Zahau hanging from the balcony of the guest house, bound hands and feet, overlooking the courtyard where Max had fallen just days prior.

The Immediate Response: Adam cut the rope using a pocketknife and called 911, setting off a chaotic emergency response that immediately intertwined the two tragedies in the public eye.

The Investigation Sets In: law enforcement arrived to secure the Coronado estate, launching an investigation that would ultimately lead the San Diego Police Department to Rule Rebecca’s death a suicide

a conclusion that continues to draw intense scrutiny and public debate years later.

Adam Shacknai VS The Civil Court:

The Wrongful Death Lawsuit: In 2013, members of Rebecca Zahu’s family filed a civil wrongful death lawsuit against Adam Shacknai, seeking accountability and presenting an alternate narrative to the police suicide ruling.

The 2018 Trial: The civil trial took place in a San Diego federal court, allowing the plaintiffs to present extensive forensic evidence, expert testimony, and arguments challenging the original police investigation.

The Verdict: The jury ultimately found Adam Shacknai liable for Rebecca Zahu’s death, awarding the family damages and establishing a stark contrast to the initial law enforcement conclusions.
