Christie Mullins.. 🌼

🌼Meet Christie Mullins (pictured above)

🌼Christie Lynn Mullins was born on August 28th, 1960 in Columbus, Ohio and attended Whetstone High School.

At 14, Christie was known for being sweet, shy, thoughtful, and gentle. She was quite with strangers, yet was giggly and talk about boys with friends. She was described as always smiling and a little naive for her age.

Christie was musical and inquisitive. She enjoyed routine, particularly eating Raisin Bran for breakfast. She never turned down a bowl of chili.

According to her mother, Christie wasn’t interested in cheer leading or gymnastics. Her father said she was athletic and swam often.

🌼Christie also had dreams of pursing a career as a fashion model. Christie was described as thin and coltish. She possessed an ethereal beauty. Her interests were considered glamorous or desirable.

Christie lived in a time of significant cultural shifts and developing youth culture in Columbus, Ohio.

🌌Columbia Social Scene: 1970s

Social gatherings included local diners, roller rinks, and drive-in theaters. Hanging out at the mall and cruising in classic cars were popular ways to express independence.

🪩Weekends often meant roller rinks. The mirrored disco ball spun above a crowd of teens. They skated to the Bee Gees, Fleetwood Mac, and Elton John.

Christie will spend part of the night circling the rink with friends. Then she will lean against a wall sipping a coke. She would be laughing and swapping stories.

North High Street in the mid-70s’ was alive with music stores, diners, thrift shops, and constant foot traffic. Teens like Christie saw it as a social hub. An afternoon begins at a record store. It often ends at a friend’s house listening to the newest top 40 hits on vinyl.

🌾August 23, 1975: The day Everything Changed:

On August 23rd, 1975, Christie was seen alive for the last time. She was walking through the wooded area behind Woolco on North High Street.

Christie had spent that afternoon at the pool with her friend, Carol Reeves. The two girls heard about a cheerleading contest. It was being held at the back of the Graceland Shopping Center.

Henry Newell, 25 at the time, was later identified as her killer.

Henry Newell.

In the immediate aftermath, he positioned himself as a supposed bystander who “discovered” her body. He manipulated the scene to deflect suspicion.

His actions; and his framing of events added an eerily unsettling layer of the crime.

Events Leading Up to the Murder:

On the afternoon of August 23, 1975, Christie Mullins left the pool on a sweltering summer day in Columbus, Ohio. She was 14, vibrant, beautiful, and still on that fragile stage where you’re between childhood and adulthood.

Sometime between leaving the pool and her last known moments alive, a rumor began circulating about a cheerleading contest. The story goes that the contest announced through a local radio station, encouraging girls to show up and try out.

Here’s where it gets strange. If you’re looking for a cheerleading team, you’d expect to meet in a school gymnasium. It is also in a rec center or even a local park.

This “contest” led Christie behind the Graceland shopping center. It was a wooden patch that was not only secluded but also had no obvious connection to sports cheerleading.

That “odd location” is one of the first big red flag. It feels like an organized event and more like bait.

Considering what we know now about Henry Newll, we can easily suspect he was behind that call.

The lure had all the hallmarks of someone who knew exactly how to coax young girls into isolated situations. This manipulation is calculated, not random.

Christie wasn’t necessarily targeted ahead of time; more, she was in the wrong place at the wrong time.

She was alone, young, and vulnerable, and that combination made her an easy target for a predator like Henry. At some point, Henry approached her. Whatever conversation or pretense he used to close the gap, it turned into a chase.

What happened next was brutally fast and terrifying. Christie was bludgeoned with a 2×4 wooden plank; A weapon that’s capable of inflicting devastating injuries.

Wood, unlike metal, absorbs quickly. This means any blood evidence was minimal. It is embedded into the grain, making it harder to spot right away.

I mean like, hello. Wake up 1975.

Within moments after committing the murder, Henry called 911.

But the timing, the circumstances, and the location all paint a much darker picture. One where the killer was there from the start, weaving himself into the narrative as though he was a passerby.

If you have read this far and enjoyed it, then thank you so much for hearing me out. Secondly, I fear this is the time where I must issue another trigger warning.

WARNING: From here on, the contents in this case are about to graphically veer into an uncomfortable area.

I usually don’t dabble in too much of the details when I dive into cases. When/if I do, I will issue a warning.

Part One Closer:

The summer air was thick with heat and tension, the kind that makes every sound sharper and every shadow heavier.

Christie & her friend Carol Reeves arrived at the designated location for the “cheer leading” tryouts.

Nonetheless, the area was empty. Carol left while Christie stayed put on a guardrail while Carol popped into a local Woolco to check the time.

Unfortunately when she arrived back, Christie had vanished without a trace. This was the last time she would be seen alive.

The next moments, the brutality, and the aftermath would leave scars on the community for decades.

But those details…they belong to the next chapter.

In Part Two, we’ll walk through the grim reality of what happened behind those trees. We will also cover the immediate investigation. Finally, we will reveal the tragic truth that took far too long to surface.
